Before submitting an application, all applicants must successfully complete a physical agility test.

Education / Experience Requirements 

Notice:  7/11/2007 - At this time the educational requirements are suspended until further notice.

To be eligible for hire as a full time deputy, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Must have thirty college hours, not counting the basic police certification course; OR

  • Must have two years experience as a full time police officer; OR

  • Must have two years service in the active military; OR

  • Must have four years experience as a reserve officer; OR

  • Must have four years service in the military reserve.

In addition, we have a "provisional reserve" program for those who meet none of the above, but wish to work for the Harris County Constable's Department, Precinct Four. If you have completed the Basic Peace Officer's Certification Course and passed the TCLEOSE examination, you may submit your application. Your application will be processed in the same manner as all applications, and if accepted as a provisional reserve, you must acquire a total of 384 points to become eligible for hire as a full time deputy. Points are awarded according to the following schedule:

  • For each college credit earned - 13 points

  • For each month of experience as a full time police officer - 16 points

  • For each month of service in the active military - 16 points

  • For each month of experience as a reserve peace officer - 8 points

  • For each month of service in the military reserve - 8 points

Provisional reserves with the Harris County Constable, Precinct Four, will receive 192 points for completing the department's full Field Training program.

On successful completion of the field training program, Precinct Four reserve deputies are certified as "Solo", and are qualified to perform their duties as a single officer. Reserve deputies are required to provide sixteen (16) hours per month of service to Precinct Four in order to maintain their commission. Solo reserves will be awarded 8 points for each month of service, and one (1) point for each hour of monthly service in excess of the required sixteen hours.  The application process for the Provisional Reserve Program is identical to that for full time deputies.

Minimum Standards for Employment

An applicant for employment by, or for a position as a provisional reserve law enforcement officer with the Harris County Constable's Office, Precinct Four, shall satisfy the following requirements as mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education as found in the Texas Administrative Code, Title 37, Section 211.80, Minimum Standards for Licensing:

  1. Must be a citizen of the United States of America .

  2. Must meet the minimum standard for entry level age found in Sec. 211.97 of this title (relating to (Minimum Entry Level Age Requirement).

  3. Must be fingerprinted and be subjected to a search of local, state, and national records and fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.

  4. Must not be on probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class C misdemeanor.

  5. Must not have ever been convicted of a Class A misdemeanor offense or above.

  6. Must not have been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor offense within the last ten years.

  7. Must not have been convicted of the offense of driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence of drugs within the last 24 months.

  8. Must not have ever been convicted at any time of a felony offense.

  9. Must be of good moral character.

  10. Must be subjected to a thorough, comprehensive background investigation by the appointing authority.

  11. Must meet one of the following minimum educational requirements: - waived at this time

    1. be a high school graduate;

    2. have passed a general educational development (GED) test indicating high school graduation level; or

    3. have 12 semester hours credit from an accredited college or university.

  12. Must be examined by a licensed physician and be declared in writing within the past 180 days both:

    1. to be physically sound and free from any defect which may adversely affect the performance of duty as a Peace Officer or Reserve Officer; and

    2. to show no trace of drug dependency or illegal drug use after a physical examination, blood test, or other medical test.

  13. Must be examined by a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or a registered professional and be declared in writing within the past 180 days by that professional to be in satisfactory psychological and emotional health.

  14. Must be interviewed personally by representatives of this office.

  15. Must not have been discharged from any military service under less than honorable conditions.

  16. Must not have had a TCLEOSE license revoked or denied by final order.

  17. Must meet the minimum training standards required by TCLEOSE.

  18. Must currently hold a valid TCLEOSE peace officer license.

  19. Must not have a voluntary surrender of the appropriate TCLEOSE license currently in effect.

  20. Must not violate any TCLEOSE rule of the Government Code, Chapter 415.

In addition to the above TCLEOSE requirements, the Harris County Precinct Four Constable's Office requires all applicants for the position of provisional reserve deputy to satisfy the following requirements:

  1.  Must be at least 21 years of age.

  2. Must not have been convicted of more than two moving traffic violations within the last year or have had more than two traffic accidents within the last year.

  3. Must have either:

    1. Completed at least 15 hours of college credit, exclusive of credits given for the basic law enforcement academy; and

    2. Completed one year of satisfactory patrol service after completing the field training program and being certified for "solo" patrol service;  OR

    3. Completed 2 years of satisfactory patrol service after completing the field training program and being certified for "solo" patrol service.

  4. Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph examination.

  5. Must submit to a credit check from an accredited Credit Bureau designated by the department.

  6. Must live fire your own duty weapon on firearms courses as prescribed by the current departmental standards for current full time Peace Officer. The minimum passing score shall be 70.

  7. All physical examinations, drug testing, psychological examinations and polygraph examinations are at the expense of the applicant. Do not submit to any of the examinations or testing until you have received a written conditional offer of employment from the Harris County Precinct Four Constable's Office AND are notified to do so.

  8. All accepted applicants will be required to successfully complete a field training program as a condition of maintaining their commission.

  9. Reserve deputy is a non-paid position, and no wages, benefits, or other remuneration is provided to any person commissioned as a reserve deputy.

  10. Any falsification or omission of required information from the application shall be grounds for termination or withdrawal of the application.
